Small organizations that still rely on human screening may also send an automated response to your online application, but often they will contact you only for an interview. Discarded applications often end up in the “circular file” (wastebasket) without any acknowledgment, especially in smaller organizations that have limited resources.

Should you follow up personally with a card or e-mail message if you don’t receive any notice that your application was received? First, check the job posting. If it instructs job applicants not to contact the organization, don’t follow up.

If the job posting contains no caveats about contacting the organization, wait a week and then follow up with a phone call, an e-mail, or a letter to the hiring manager if you have or can obtain the relevant contact information. A LinkedIn message may work, too. When following up by e-mail, make sure the subject line includes the position name and specifies that the message is in follow-up to a job application. Among your follow-up questions, ask if the hiring manager has received your application and if any additional information is needed. Also, ask if there is a timeline for the hiring process (Crawford 2019).
